Psychotherapy Within a Christian Context

Since 1992, IMFH has had the privilege to serve believers of every theological hue. We have had clients who were American as well as from various countries in the world. Lay and ordained persons have been welcomed to this practice. We work with the individual(s) brave enough to take the journey inward.

All sessions are kept confidential and are not reported to any referring agencies or persons without our client's permission.

All house personnel continue their spiritual maturity through their own personal attendance at New York City fellowships. Professional skills are enhanced through seminars and other forms of continuing education.

If you are a pastor or other professional in contact with clients who need therapy, call us. If we are not the appropriate service, we can refer you to another Christian counselor or to an appropriate counseling agency.

Building Blocks of our House

Our traditional psychotherapy program is our oldest approach. It combines a professional (modified Freudian, cognitive behavioral, systems, client centered) approach with the knowledge of Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ as presented in the Scriptures. That is a long way to say that we are Christian therapists.

We also serve couples who are having a difficulty in their union. We help both of you think through what the underlying issues are that drew you together (and that draw you apart). While your decisions are your decisions, we come along to clarify.

We are a part of a motley army of therapists, tackling the opposition in the arena of mental health difficulties. We are doing that using “five smooth stones,” which comprise the IMFH services in Brooklyn Heights, New York in Psychotherapy within a Christian Context.

We do not substitute for Christian fellowship, denominational preference, girl friends, Uncle Bubba, guy friends, pastoral care or Oprah, for there is room for each to be used in the design and desire of increased mental wholeness. We are simply one, glorious way. We answer the question, “Why do I keep doing what I do, and bring those actions into my church, marriage, employment?” We discover it together. Christ is in the room.

Brief Therapy Program : This approach combines the professionalism expected by every client at IMFH, but has a therapeutic focus limited to 10 sessions. This program is less expensive. Clients may choose to register twice only. Transfers to other House Programs or to outside referrals are thereafter available.

Vacation Talk Op : This approach gives service to vacationers needing to continue professional assistance begun elsewhere or to begin therapy while on vacation. Limited to 3 Sessions, attendees may transfer to other limited time Programs.

Gift Sessions : This approach enables friends, relatives and the Community of Faith to contribute to the health of a loved one. From time to time IMFH has received payments from interested others on behalf of a client. This Program offers Givers an opportunity to invest in 3 sessions only with the agreement that the client simultaneously pays a modest investment fee per week towards his/her own health needs. Afterwards, transfers to other House programs are offered. This gift is limited to one-time per client.

Caleb Dimensions : This program provides individual therapy to the older adult, 65+ years. Sessions are weekly at a lower session figure. Straight Medicare is accepted. (Individuals only).

An Opening for You

In My Father’s House (IMFH) is a psychotherapy house and private practice since 1992, where Christian principles and professional excellence combine to serve the metropolitan area in New York City. We want to build an excellence service in psychotherapy among staff persons for the work of ministry in the mental health area.

IMFH, “the House,” provides warmth for its clients, within a safe and confidential environment, with an opportunity to change, the freedom to walk in the fullness that God gives to all of us. Our scriptural connection is found in John 14:1,2 indicating our belief that there are many rooms (psychological, physical, spiritual) in one House under the headship of Jesus, the Christ. Most, if not all of our clients are Christians living in the metropolitan area.

We are currently experiencing modest growth reflecting the needs of the special community we serve and thus we are looking for individuals who have the following desires:

• To be a part of a life-giving, hospitality based service which seeks to meet the mental health needs of our community
• To continue a personal process of Christian maturity and professional competence
• To be able to see persons in the Christian faith and outside that faith community with understanding and respect

We require Masters' level in academics, with modest experience. Your own therapy or a willingness to experience same. Professional and personal references are required and upon hire we will also require six months to see if our relationship fits. We look forward to seeing you. Give us a call.
